Want to hear Renée Fleming have a crack at some big Strauss? You can see a live webcast of Ariadne auf Naxos from the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden on Medici TV today at 2:15 (NYC time) or 8:15 (European time). Fleming sings the title role, Jane Archibald sings my namesake Zerbinetta (I've heard good things), Sophie Koch is the Komponist, Robert Dean Smith Bacchus, and Christian Thielemann conducts the Staatskapelle Dresden (!). The production is by Philippe Arlaud.

Saw Jane sing Zerbinetta last year in Toronto. She was excellent.
I'll be interested to hear what you think of Jane Archibald. I couldn't fault her, but still I felt she was the weakest of the four leads... can't put my finger on it, but the singing is never really very characterful or special. Will be interesting to hear her up close on the mics rather than in house. Production is real bad so prepare yourself. Renee struggles to create a character but to me it seems the fault of the production Same problem with Bacchus. Very interested to hear Renee up close too - she sounded great in the theatre, though obviously past her prime.
Ooft! How I wish I could have seen this — I love Strauss!
Strauss überall auf's Internet this week, it seems. I watched La Monnaie's Salome on Thursday - not a bad effort, though I couldn't figure out how a paedophilic Karl Lagerfeld and a Baghdad compound fit together, and the less said about the conducting the better. But I really liked Amanda Echalaz. I don't feel strongly either way about Renée, but her Countess in the Wien Capriccio was something. I'll watch anyway for Thielemann, he's either retiring - Gott sei Dank - the old Wiener Staatsoper production or premiering the new Salzburg import, depending on the gossip you trust. But definitely in 2014. Likelihood of him getting decent rehearsal time with the Staatskapelle much better though.
